Launch of TRLabs Project
December 17th, 2007
SMT participated in the launch of the Livin’ Lab – a space designed to demonstrate TRLabs’ eHome research and development (R&D) program – in Calgary. The Lab showcases recent innovations and applied research work produced by members and researchers from the TRLabs member consortium. SMT had the privilege of integrating their latest technology with their building intelligence system.
TRLabs, or Telecommunication Research Laboratories, is one of the first organizations to locate their business office at the University of Manitoba Smartpark. TRLabs is Canada’s largest information and communications technology R&D consortium, providing research, development, and commercialization support for its university, government and industry members.
TRLabs has research facilities in Calgary, Edmonton, Saskatoon, Regina and Winnipeg. Consortium members consist of companies such as Manitoba Hydro, MTS Allstream, SaskTel, TELUS and Vansco Electronics. SMT became an industry associate member of TRLabs in December 2006.
As a member, SMT is permitted to license or review specific research work performed by TRLabs; some of this knowledge was used during the implementation of the wireless sensor to study the external influences
on wireless sensor networks in certain environments. In addition to the excellent networking opportunities and knowledge gained from TRLabs, their management played a key role in connecting us with one of their
members, Manitoba Hydro, which resulted in our contract to monitor the Manitoba Hydro green roof on their new downtown office building.
