Sherbrook Flats, a new 6-storey apartment block adjacent to the University of Winnipeg campus, was built with exposed concrete masonry walls and has 71 units. SMT was on this project, providing thermal and energy efficiency monitoring for walls.

Sensor sets have been installed to monitor and evaluate the energy efficiency and in-situ effective thermal resistance of the wall assemblies located at Sherbrook Flats in Winnipeg, MB. The sensor sets include, heat flux, temperature, embedded moisture, and RH sensors. The thermal resistance sensors installed use the same physics used to determine the R-value of a material with the exception that R-value calculations are
based on a static test performed on a material in a preset environment. Dynamic Thermal Resistance is the thermal resistance that the actual wall assembly experiences. A research paper is currently in progress to analyze the wall assemblies under Winnipeg’s harsh weather transitions.
