Overview
Moisture damage is quietly draining billions from Sweden’s building industry every year. According to government estimates, the price tag exceeds 100 billion SEK annually—a staggering figure that reflects both direct repair costs and broader impacts on health and the environment.
Even though Sweden is known for high building standards, moisture continues to creep into our homes, schools, and public buildings. And when it does, the results are more than just cosmetic—mold, structural issues, bad indoor air, and serious renovation bills all follow.
How Did This Happen?
The problem didn’t show up overnight. A lot of it stems from how buildings have been constructed over the past few decades. For starters, moisture has been getting into buildings during construction—think wet materials that never fully dry or rain exposure during build stages. At the same time, many buildings now have poorly designed or unbalanced ventilation, which can lead to condensation where you don’t want it. We’ve also made homes more airtight to save energy, but in doing so, we’ve reduced the building’s ability to “breathe,” or dry out naturally. Add all that up, and you've got the perfect recipe for long-term moisture problems.
What Was Wrong With the Design?
Some design choices made things worse:
Flat or low-sloped roofs and terraces often lack proper drainage, making them vulnerable to leaks.
Kitchens and bathrooms are more complicated these days, with more plumbing, steam-producing appliances, and water fixtures—all potential sources of hidden leaks.
Poor detailing at key points—like where walls meet roofs or windows—can let water sneak in over time.
These aren’t just mistakes from lazy construction. In many cases, the designs themselves weren’t properly adapted to Sweden’s wet climate or didn’t take moisture risks seriously enough.
Aftermath
So what’s the result of all this? It’s not just the occasional moldy wall or peeling paint.
Health issues are a big concern. About one in five Swedes live in homes with visible mold or moisture, which can worsen asthma, allergies, and general well-being.
On top of that, around a third of Sweden’s entire building stock is believed to have some level of moisture damage that can lead to mold growth or musty odors—posing a risk to indoor air quality.
Then there’s the environmental cost. Constant renovations, material waste, and demolition work from moisture problems lead to higher emissions and landfill use.
And of course, the economic impact: rising insurance claims, property value drops, and repair bills that keep piling up.
Moving Forward
This is a complex problem, but it’s not unsolvable. There’s a lot that can be done—starting with prevention.
Design smarter: Buildings should be designed from the ground up with moisture safety in mind, using materials and layouts that manage water and allow drying.
Catch issues early: Moisture monitoring tools, inspections, and better construction drying processes can help identify risks before they turn into damage.
Train the industry: Builders, architects, and site workers need the right education and tools to avoid making the same mistakes.
Work together: Fixing this problem will require everyone—from developers to inspectors—to be on the same page.
Moisture might not seem like the most exciting topic, but it’s silently doing real damage to our buildings, our health, and our budgets. The good news is that with smarter practices and a shift in mindset, we can start building—and maintaining—spaces that are drier, healthier, and more durable for the future.
