Technical Sales Engineer (based Auckland, New Zealand)

As we continue to expand globally, we’re looking for a driven Technical Sales Engineer based in Auckland with a passion for engineering, technology, and the built environment. We are seeking a dynamic and motivated Entrepreneur Technical Sales person with construction background and engineering mindset to serve as the vital link between innovative leak detection technology and the roofing industry. In this role, you will work with clients, consultants, and our internal project delivery team to promote and sell our technology solutions for monitoring the integrity and performance of buildings. This position involves sales, client relationship management, and technical expertise to ensure successful project outcomes.

Responsibilities:


Technical Sales:


  • Serve as a primary point of contact for SMT with local contractors.

  • Develop and nurture relationships with roof consultants, general contractors, product representatives, and other key stakeholders in the roofing industry.

  • Perform outside sales activities, including introducing SMT services to potential clients and attending industry conventions, conferences, and seminars.

  • Read and comprehend technical specifications and construction drawings to provide accurate shop drawings, and estimates for roofing and building projects.

  • Manage client interactions through SMT CRM tools and respond to inbound referrals from the website.

  • Conduct follow-ups with clients via phone and email to ensure satisfaction and continued business.

  • Support inside sales efforts, including outreach, quote follow-up, and assisting with new customer development.

  • Develop and manage project contracts, coordinating SMT staff and customers for seamless deployments.

  • Ensure CRM systems are maintained with up-to-date sales information.

  • Create and coordinate shop drawings and project documentation, managing their accuracy and timeliness.

  • Identify and address points of friction in sales processes to ensure a smooth customer journey from initial contact to project completion.

  • Expand market contacts, fostering relationships with key industry players such as estimators, roofing contractors, and consultants.

  • Participate in product awareness campaigns and monthly customer outreach initiatives.

  • Develop internal processes to enhance cross-departmental coordination (marketing, outreach, support, install & service).


Technical Engineering / Service:


  • Service sensor system components such as cables, enclosures, and sensors.

  • Assist with remote service and troubleshooting of existing installed system.

  • Maintain detailed photo and video records of installation and service work.

  • Adhere to all safety protocols and work procedures, maintaining compliance with site-specific instructions.

  • Analyze sensor data and interpret trends related to building assembly performance, using prescribed templates and work instructions.

  • Generate comprehensive field reports and assist in the preparation of post-occupancy analysis.

  • Manage project budgets, tasks, and billables to ensure goals and milestones are achieved.

  • Track project progress and provide weekly updates on task completion and budgetary performance.

  • Participate in the recruitment process for technical field roles for local projects.

  • Other duties as assigned by your department.


Qualifications and Requirements:


  • Bachelor’s degree or diploma in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, Building Science, or related discipline).

  • Minimum 2 years of experience in construction industry (related to roofing, waterproofing, or building envelope)

  • Understanding of construction principles and procedures.

  • Familiarity with construction drawings, specifications, and estimating practices.

  • Proven track record of managing technical sales cycles from lead generation to project delivery.

  • Ability to balance technical detail with commercial insight when proposing solutions to clients.

  • Proficiency with CRM systems (e.g., Salesforce, or equivalent) for managing client relationships and sales pipelines.

  • Proficiency with AutoCAD, Fusion 360 (Autodesk), SolidWorks, ArchiCAD etc.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and comfortable learning new digital tools and platforms.

  • Basic knowledge of electrical and low-voltage systems for troubleshooting and installation support.

  • Excellent presentation, negotiation, and communication skills, both written and verbal.

  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships with contractors, consultants, and project stakeholders.

  • Commitment to safety standards and adherence to on-site protocols.

  • Ability to perform light technical servicing of system components, including sensors, cabling, and enclosures.

  • Self-motivated and results-driven with a hands-on, problem-solving approach.

  • Team-oriented with a collaborative spirit and a customer-first mindset.

  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to project sites and client meetings as required.

  • Eligibility to work in both New Zealand and Australia is considered an asset.
